FieldRate is deck estimating and structural takeoff software built by Connor Menges, a working deck builder who got tired of watching contractors lose bids because their quoting process was slow, imprecise, and disconnected from the structural reality of what they were building.

Connor is the founder of FieldRate and a deck builder himself. He writes every article on this blog personally, including the pricing guides, material comparisons, and estimating how-tos. His work focuses on the intersection of residential deck construction, IRC structural code, and the workflows contractors actually use in the field.
Every pricing figure, span-table reference, and estimating formula on this site is drawn from IRC residential code, published manufacturer pricing, and hands-on experience building decks. If a number is wrong or out of date, email main.outdoorimpact@gmail.com and he will fix it.
Editorial Policy
- Authorship. All articles are written by Chase Menges unless otherwise noted. No AI-generated filler, no ghostwritten content.
- Sources. Statistics and pricing figures reference published IRC code sections, manufacturer price lists, or named industry data sources.
- Disclosure. FieldRate is the publisher of this blog and competes with every tool mentioned in our comparisons. Comparison articles include an explicit disclosure at the top.
- Corrections. Factual errors are corrected in place with a dated update note.
